Universal Life Insurance in Frisco
Universal life gives you permanent coverage with room to adjust. You can raise or lower premiums within limits, build cash value and change the death benefit as life shifts. We explain how the policy works, what keeps it healthy and whether it fits better than term or whole life.
Permanent coverage that bends with your plans
A universal life policy pairs a death benefit with a cash value account. Each premium goes into that account, the insurer deducts the cost of insurance and fees, and what remains earns interest at a declared rate. Because the account carries the policy, you have some freedom over how much you pay and when.
That flexibility is the reason to choose it, and also the reason it needs care. Pay too little for too long and the cash value can drain, which puts the policy at risk of lapsing. We set a funding level that keeps your coverage on track and show you, in plain numbers, what happens if you change it.
It tends to suit people who want coverage for life but expect income or obligations to move around: business owners with uneven years, parents with a long horizon, or anyone who has outgrown a term policy.

What our universal life work includes
- 01
A needs review before any quote
We start with what the coverage has to do: replace income, cover a business obligation or leave something for a beneficiary. The face amount follows from that, not from a round number.
- 02
Side-by-side illustrations
You see projected cash value and premiums under current and guaranteed assumptions. We walk through both columns, because the gap between them is where surprises come from.
- 03
A funding plan you can keep
We help you pick a target premium that keeps the policy healthy, plus a floor you should not drop below.
- 04
Death benefit option choice
A level benefit, or an increasing benefit that adds the cash value on top. We explain how each affects cost and what your beneficiary receives.
- 05
Beneficiary and ownership setup
We go over primary and contingent beneficiaries and who should own the policy. Ownership matters more than most people expect for business and estate uses.
- 06
Annual reviews with the same agent
The person who set up your policy reads its annual statement with you each year, so nobody has to relearn your situation from a file.
Questions about Universal Life Insurance?
Call(469) 717-3900Signs universal life may be the right fit
Your term ends before your needs do
If a term policy expires in a few years and you still have dependents or debts, converting or replacing it with universal life can keep coverage in place.
Your income rises and falls
Commission earners and business owners can pay more in strong years and less in lean ones, within the policy's limits.
You want lifelong coverage for less than whole life
Universal life often costs less than whole life for the same face amount. The trade is fewer built-in guarantees.
An older policy is slipping
Universal life sold when interest rates were higher may now be underfunded. If your statement shows the cash value shrinking year over year, it deserves a careful look.
A business arrangement needs funding
Buy-sell agreements and key person coverage often call for permanent insurance that can be adjusted as the business changes.
How we set up a universal life policy
- 1
A first conversation by phone
We ask about your family, income, existing coverage and what you want the policy to do. There is nothing to fill out before we talk.
- 2
Illustrations and a recommendation
We run illustrations at a few funding levels and explain the trade-offs. If term life or whole life suits you better, we say so.
- 3
Application and underwriting
The insurer will ask health questions and may request a paramedical exam or records from your doctor. We tell you what to expect and keep you posted until a decision arrives.
- 4
Delivery and first review
When the policy is issued, we go through it page by page, confirm the beneficiaries and set a date for your first annual review.
What shapes the cost of universal life
There is no single price for universal life, because you choose much of it. Your premium depends on your health, how much coverage you want and how firmly you want it backed. We show you each lever before you decide.
- Age and health
- Your underwriting class, set by health history, tobacco use and any exam results, has the largest effect on the cost of insurance. Applying younger usually means a better rate class.
- Face amount and benefit option
- A larger benefit costs more, and the increasing option costs more than level because the insurer has more at risk.
- How much guarantee you want
- Some designs include a no-lapse guarantee that holds coverage as long as a set premium is paid. That added security usually raises the required premium.
- Your funding pattern
- Paying more early builds cash value that can carry the policy later. Paying the minimum keeps costs low today but leaves less cushion.
- Riders
- Additions such as waiver of premium or chronic illness benefits add cost and should earn their place in your plan.
Universal life questions we hear often
Can my universal life policy lapse?
Yes. If the cash value can no longer cover the monthly cost of insurance and fees, the policy can lapse unless you add money. That is why we set a funding target and review your annual statement with you. Designs with a no-lapse guarantee stay in force as long as the required premium is paid.
How is universal life different from whole life?
With whole life, the premium is locked in when the policy is issued and the cash value grows on a schedule the insurer promises in writing. Universal life gives you room to change what you pay and how large the benefit is, while the interest credited to its cash value can be adjusted by the insurer over the years. In short, you give up some certainty in exchange for flexibility, and often a lower cost. Our Whole Life Insurance page covers the other side of that choice.
Can I borrow from the cash value?
Usually, through policy loans or withdrawals. Loans accrue interest and, if unpaid, reduce what your beneficiary receives. Withdrawals lower the cash value and can raise the risk of lapse, so we look at the effect with you before any money comes out.
Do I need a medical exam?
Often, depending on your age and the amount of coverage. Some insurers offer simplified underwriting for smaller face amounts, with health questions only. We tell you which route applies before you apply.
What about indexed universal life?
Indexed universal life credits interest based partly on a market index, with a floor and a cap. It can grow more than a standard policy in good years, but it is more complex. We explain how the crediting works and show illustrations at modest assumptions, not the most flattering ones.
